Settling in the UK

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is generally granted after five years continuous legal residence in the UK or after two years if the application is based on marriage/civil partnership. It is the last step before obtaining British citizenship and allows unlimited right to remain in the UK with few restrictions.  In order to secure ILR applicants have to pass the Life in the UK Test.

The existing ILR regime will undergo huge changes when the new British citizenship procedures are introduced. Those hoping to secure ILR in the short/medium term are highly advised to consult specialist advice to ensure that their current immigration plans will achieve lasting rights to remain in the UK.

Life in the UK Test

The Life in the UK test is an exam which tests applicants' knowledge of the culture and history of the UK. Applicants must achieve a pass grade before they can be granted ILR or British citizenship. The test is taken on line and there is a help book available to assist applicants to prepare. For more information please visit www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk.
