Ilke joined our Prison Law team as a Case Manager in June 2005. She has in depth experience in Criminal Law and a wealth of life experience, both of which she finds to be considerable assets when working with her clients. She holds a strong understanding of process within the law, which she combines with a keen desire to see justice happen. The firm is fortunate to have her on the team.

I represent life sentenced prisoners at HMP Prescoed, HMP Parkhurst, HMP Channings Wood, HMP Dartmoor and HMP Leyhill in relation to parole reviews, recall hearings and stalled progress. I have also represented determinate sentenced prisoners and those who are subject to the new sentence of imprisonment for the public protection (IPP).

One of the most important things I’ve learned about working in prison law is that each case is absolutely unique. No two sets of circumstances are ever the same, because no two people are exactly the same. I believe strongly in treating people as the individuals they are. It is only by listening to each person and learning in detail about their unique set of circumstances that they can be given the proper advice and assistance. It is important to me that my clients feel they have an advocate they can rely on.

When faced with something as daunting and as serious as life in prison, it’s easy for a prisoner to feel swamped by the system and to feel that they are fighting an unequal battle. I believe that it is our job to ensure that this does not happen and that each client actually has the full benefit of the law behind them. I feel that it is important that a client has an advocate who is able to work with them as an individual, and I act to make sure that our clients are dealt with fairly, equally and justly. It’s only too easy for people who are faced with the law to feel that they are being judged, labeled and categorised. My job is not to judge, but to represent to the highest standard and to ensure that our clients progress through the prison system, with release as the ultimate aim.
